Spruce Mountain Family Outing
On Saturday morning we headed out to Spruce Mountain – just past Monument – for a five mile hike. It was a nice day and it felt good to finally get out, explore our area and take in the Colorado scenery.
Lots of beautiful scenic views and sticks to carry around, as we wound our way around the top of the Spruce Mountain Trail Loop. We stopped for lunch at the perfect mid way look out. From here we walked along the cliff edge towards Windy Point. Beautiful rock cliffs to play on a take pictures.
A family picture at Windy Point.
As we continued around the loop the sky darkened and we watched a distant storm with sporadic bolts of lighting. We took the trail down into Spruce Meadow and onto Eagle Pass Trail. I think this may have been my favorite part. Really beautiful fields with a distant thunderstorm coming right toward us.
At this point the storm was practically over us. I pulled out my camera for a few pictures but had to shield it from the rain. As the lightening went off literally all around us we started a full run to the van. A video would have showed it all much better but it was quite exciting.
By the time we were back to the van we were pretty wet but boy, did we have a great time. A perfect exciting finale to a great hike. I’d say we’re kind of liking these afternoon thunder storms.
