Canadian/New England Cruise: Boston, Massachusetts
We had our last breakfast aboard the Veendam and then disembarked the ship and took two Taxi’s over to our Marriott in the Theater District of Downtown Boston. After taking a picture out of our hotel room window (above) we got ready for a full day sightseeing Boston. My dad was pretty excited since he had never been here before. Chris and I hadn’t been to Boston for fifteen years so we were excited as well. We walked through Boston Commons and started along the Freedom Trail.
The Granary Burying Ground…
Old City Hall…
Irish Famine Memorial and Old South Meeting House…
Walking through the streets of Boston, we stopped to watch a bike race for a few minutes. Boston is so much fun. Always a lot going on.
We decided to take a Boston Harbor Tour and got great seats on top of the boat.
After the boat cruise we hopped on our ‘Hop on Hop off Bus tour’ and hopped off at the Home of Paul Revere.
And then made our way to Mike’s Pastry for cannoli's. It was packed and they were delicious.
The Paul Revere Mall…
The Old North Church… interesting cubicles with a nameplate for each family.
Boy, do I miss cobblestone. Loved seeing it in so many parts of Boston.
Copp’s Hill Burying Ground…
The USS Cassin Young – a Fletcher-class destroyer ship who served in World War II and continued in service until 1960. Now she sits in the Boston Navy Yard across from the old warships the USS Constitution.
Megan’s Injury… It was just before boarding the USS Cassin Young that Ryan called us to tell us that he was on the way to the Emergency Room with Megan. She was playing in her Pride Red Soccer Game and ‘giving it her all’ she tried to get the 50/50 ball by running straight into the opposing player – or she was run into… somehow Megan ended up on the ground, tried to get up and play and ended up back on the ground. Her coach and other parents watching said she was so tough through the whole thing and seeing ‘Bob’ on the ground meant she must really be hurt. Our good friend, Michelle decided Megan needed to head to the Emergency Room and had Ryan (with Megan) follow her there. She is a nurse at our local hospital and got her right into X-ray. Ryan texted a picture of the X-ray to Chris and he read it sitting in the back of our ‘Hop on/Hop off Boston Tour bus’. A non-displaced fracture of the collar bone and six weeks in a sling. No more soccer for Bob.
It was hard for us to be away while all that was going on – but we are so grateful for great soccer parent friends and that Ryan was there with her. Michelle followed Ryan to our house to make sure Megan was set up with medication and found Katie and Emily making brownies for her. Glad the kids were pulling together while we were gone. So grateful for her Michelle’s help too -- and glad it wasn’t worse.
Faneuil Hall Marketplace – an outdoor shopping center -- the perfect place to end our day. We wandered around and watched performers, ate at Wagamama (a tradition with Dan and Sarah dating back to our London, England trip), went in and out of shops, enjoyed the great atmosphere and ate a fantastic sundae at Ghirardelli’s. It was such a fun night.
