France Trip - Chaumont-sur-Loire and Gardens

We parked off the river at the base of town and then walked up through the streets to get to the Chaumont-sur-Loire - perched on the hill above the Loire river.

I think I took a picture of a bedroom stool in every Château we visited starting with Versaille.

So cool to see the French fleur-de-lis: a stylized lily composed of three petals bound together near their bases. It is especially know from the former royal arms of France, in which it appears in gold on a blue field. It’s the symbol of fertility and purity but also royalty and power.

The crowned porcupine is the royal emblew of King Louis XII symbolizing his power, courage, and ability to defend his kingdom. The porcupine was believed to be able to shoot its quills, symbolizing a fierce defender that is invincible.

The Attic

It’s unusual to be able to wander through a castle’s attic so we were especially interested in the narrow top-floor hallways with cracking paint. The 20-30 rooms were small and filled with old helmets, paintings and lanterns but I imaged them as the servant halls from long ago.

The Chapel

I remember the chapel being close to one of the bedrooms - it seemed there was a door leading to the small chapel balcony from one of the royal apartments. I especially loved the beautiful carved and embroidered prayer chair and now I kind of want one for myself. A little chapel and a little chair.

Beautiful view from one of the highest windows and curly stairs taking us back down.

After our tour through the castle and extensive grounds we finished in the Festival Gardens - beautiful flowers everywhere.
